History

Founded in January 2021, The Here and There Collective (THAT Co.) was born out of a series of studio visits that took place over the pandemic. Confined to our homes, but readily available to connect, we were able to get to know Asian-diasporic artists in and out of the NY and the US. A common refrain kept appearing in those conversations — one where artists were navigating issues of identity in their practices but struggling to find references that looked like them or peers to connect with.

We searched for a contemporary resource to share in answer to these queries but were at a loss. So we began our own to chronicle the many Asian-diasporic artists we have gotten to know - online and readily accessible for anyone to learn from, converse with, and find support with.

Since then, we’ve stayed committed to uplifting and connecting contemporary artists from the Asian diaspora while building a lasting community highlighting representation in the broader art ecosystem.

What we do?

We believe strongly in the power of community, and seek to make space for narratives often overlooked in the Western art canon. Our efforts are targeted towards connecting members of the contemporary art world living both in the West and East through conversation, education, direct support, fundraising, and community-building events.

CONVERSATION AND EDUCATION
Our online programming is at the heart of what we do. Through in-depth weekly artist features and live conversations on IG, THAT Co. brings new audiences to emerging and mid-career artists from the Asian diaspora.

Support4

DIRECT SUPPORT & FUNDRAISING
Our successful summer online benefit auction with Artsy raised $200K for Heart of Dinner and AALDEF. We also provided several direct to artists support in form of a free studio grant program, and through our participation at Future Fairs where we introduced several emerging artists to a new market.

COMMUNITY BUILDING EVENTS
Building a strong and lasting community is at the heart of what we do. Through curated dinners, we have helped build offline connections and continued conversation between artists, curators, cultural workers, collectors, and our supporters.

How can you help?

Since THAT Co. began in January 2021 we’ve seen a change in how Asian artists are being highlighted and recognized. We believe it is important now more than ever to keep up this momentum by bringing together new like-minded individuals and organizations to help shape our growing community. We hope you consider becoming a part of our movement and providing critical support for THAT Co. to continue our role in uplifting the Asian diasporic community in the arts.

Our operation is growing and we have many exciting initiatives on the horizon. Donate now through our Cornerstone partner:
