Q: Tell us about your practice

A: My work is based on daily observations that I record first in diary form and then translate into large, semi-figurative oil paintings on canvas. Mundane events and everyday moments are depicted with large abstracted planes of colors, and bold, layered marks that evoke the subjectivity of my inner life. These instances, and memories are cropped and arranged to focus on specific reflections that have been strongly etched into my consciousness.

These moments are recorded and relived through painting, the result of which are works that reflect my personal history, and act as intimate journals and meditations on self-discovery.

Q: Transparent hands are a recurring theme in your work. Can you explain the significance of this and what led you to use it?

A: I started that ghost-like lines of limbs longing for my boyfriend who lived in Chicago. I spent some time with him in Chicago, came back to my studio in LA and made paintings of our memories. We were in a long distance relationship for over 4 years, and I wanted to express when your special person is not next to you right now, but you remember and miss how he touches your body or your gestures towards each other.

COLLECTOR'S QUOTE

"Hiejin’s paintings are her own style, semi figurative and very personal. This talented artist uses metaphors showing her emotions and also leaves clues for the viewer. More importantly Hiejin is beautiful both inside and out."
