MAI TA

Q: Tell us about your practice

A: For me, art making is a way to express my feelings. I’ve never been good at communicating my emotions verbally but with painting, it’s just natural. Everything I’ve ever created is a representation of how I felt at the time.

Q: You just recently moved back to Vietnam after spending time in the US, how does that influence your artmaking process?

A: The energy is different. There’s something about Vietnam that just makes me want to pick up a brush and paint. I’ve been meeting a lot of young creatives in Saigon and being around them is so inspiring. Saigon is an energizing city and creatively growing as well, so to be back here at this exact moment feels like fate. Like I’m meant to be here to engage with my community and see where it takes my art practice.

Q: What has been inspiring you lately?

A: Definitely the photography community in Saigon. They are such a collaborative and supportive group of people. Watching them work and hearing them talk about their mission, you just can’t help but be in awe of their spirit.

Q: What's next for you?

A: I’m not sure at the moment but I can tell you I am very excited.

COLLECTOR'S QUOTE

"Mai Ta work is uniquely haunting but paradoxically soothing. She tends to use a minimalistic drawing with a dichotic palette to pop up what is a flat imagery to be intensely stretched in space and time. The whole work of art becomes a canvas for the viewer to build on a personal contribution. Don’t be fooled by her miniature works, it’s that sharp squinting of the eye that is needed to dive into Mai Ta’s world. It will absorb the viewer."
